Imam Zankawah is the Chief Imam of the ancient Islamic community of Larabanga in Northern Ghana. As the hub of Islamic activities in Ghana, Larabanga is home to the oldest mosque in West Africa and the only town in Ghana widely considered a 100% Muslim settlement.
Before ascending to this throne, Imam Zankawah also served as local Imam in neighbouring communities in the area. Imam Zankawah is a man of nobility and piety who considers teaching and learning as the main vehicles towards enlightenment, reducing poverty, and building a secured future. To this end, he has been an ardent supporter of the cause of education. His encouragement, effort, and desire in this cause over several decades has ultimately helped many people within his reach to attain higher levels of both Secular and Islamic education. To ensure that his legacy of empowerment through education continues, the Imam Zankawah Foundation was established in his honour.
